Freedom Lost?

Have we lost our freedom of speach? Have the nation's press lost their freedom? I would like to hear from any journalist in this country or from abroad regarding press freedom. I find lately, the printed media becoming more and more bias. Is this the work of a certain group of people controlling the media companies. I understand that a prominent figure mentioned by Jeff Ooi on his blog not only have strong influence on NST but also the prime minister. This is according to Matthias Chang, the former political secretary of our previous PM, Tun Mahathir. Is this causing NST to change its course?

I thought the past was bad enough. When we were under the previous PM, it was said that there was no press freedom but I was too young then to really understand it. I did however noticed the discrepancy that exist between the state controlled printed media and the one controlled by the opposition. With the advancement of information technology, I'm now able to search and read on a wider scope. This enables me to know better the other side of the story which is normally not known to the masses.

In today's The Star, the Deputy Information Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye urged bloggers to blog accurately. What does accuracy mean? Does it mean non-offensive? No it doesn't. Regarding racial issues, the Malays would often find what the Chinese would say as offensive, so would Indians. Often we hear of questions being raised on the issue of Malay rights being shot down with WMD(weapons of mass destruction) in and out of parliament. What was raised was relevant and accurate. So do we now have to refrain from expressing our rights? Are we given the remedy to verbal and blogging diarrhea? I guess many of us are mature citizens of a developing country able to live together regardless of our differences. Certainly we also can listen and respond positively to each others short comings. None of us wants to be marginalised. Neither do we want to see another race falling behind. We can all make this country a better place to live. What do you think about press freedom and freedom of speach in Malaysia?
