Par Value

How on earth can the government calculate the wealth/ownership of the Malays based on par value and not market value. Scared to expose the super rich individuals in the country right? From what I understand after reading some stuff on par value, I'm feeling digusted at the government even more. Alright, the thing is, if par value is used then that would mean Malays's wealth is still measured based on the initial investment since time started. So lets say, back in the 1970s a nasi lemak stall would cost $10 to start and today this Mr. Ali has build a chain of nasi lemak restaurants would still be worth $10. Hello my dear Malay friends, you have been called a poor jerk by your own government. EPU’s Methodology is seriously flawed!

It’s very normal for a company to start with a paid up capital based on par value and remains so for a long time. It doesn’t need to increase the paid capital (as long as the company is not short of new capital injection) because the accounting and business fraternities value the shares on market value. Par value of shares have little significance except for a archaic company law disclosure requirement.

For example, a company starts with a paid up (par value) capital of $1 million in 2006, and is awarded a 10 years contract to build a bridge. Say, it makes a profit of $10 million for the duration of 10 years and keeps the profits intact. The market value of the company in 2016 is $11 million but its par value still remains intact at $1 million. The shareholders of the company can extract the profits through directors’ emoluments, dividends, management services, etc

EPU’s methodology of calculation of bumi equity is shrouded in secrecy. From what has been disclosed in the press, it is gathered that the methodology uses the par value of shares and exclusion of GLC companies.

Until things can be clarified, basing on generally accepted accounting principles and present accounting norms, EPU’s methodology is seriously flawed as demonstrated below.

Example 1 :

Ali owns 100 Tenaga shares. Par value $100 ($1 per share). Market value $1,000 ($10 per share).

Ah Chong owns 1,000 Farlim shares. Par value $1,000 ($1 per share). Market value $430 ($0.43 per share).

EPU Methodology :

Ah Chong is 10 times richer than Ali. Therefore, Ali needs help to be on par with Ah Chong.

Flaw:

Par value has no relation to the actual value of shares. In fact, Ali’s is richer than Ah Chong. If EPU does not take relative wealth into the equation, how does it know who to help to redress the equal distribution of wealth? Obviously, as this case shows, EPU may be helping the wrong guy!

My friends and I were just chatting over the issue that Harry Lee raised recently. We concluded that Malaysians are always the subject of criticism because of our dumb government. We have a deputy who cannot graduate with Honours from a UK university. I thought they gave it for free when finish your final year, unlike Australian universities. Anyways, the Internal Security Ministry released a statement yesterday regarding summonses with collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Bank Negara, Police, insurance companies and relevant agencies. Alright, as I read the first part of it in today's The Star, I thought it was a good move from the government to collect old debts from its very own family members. The as I read on, I was rather stunned at how dumb they are at making statements, what more policies!

"Pay up first" "Settle summonses or you can't renew vehicle insurance". This were on the front page. Then as I flip through to page 4, guess what was written. "Lower premiums for motorist with few summonses". Make up your mind! Can we or can't we renew our insurance? If one cannot renew his/her insurance how can one pay higher premiums because of outstanding summonses. Ridiculous!@?#$...It is either you impose a higher premium or refuse their renewal. Why not, for those with more than 10 summonses, you reject their renewal and for those below that number you impose a multiplier on each outstanding summon.

AND

Pak Lah says "Our education system is Islamic" just because of Quranic studies has been included into the present system. Hey o'mighty one, have you forgotten about Bible Knowledge? I'm not allowing my children to study in public schools...home schooling or private schools will be non-Islamic. What are you trying to impose on the non-Muslims? HUh?!?@?@ Remember, we a re multi racial and religious nation. NOT ISLAMIC. Islam is the official religion only because the majority are Muslims. What if one day the Buddhist becomes the majority? Are you willing to make a statement saying our education system is Buddhist? I say, ths is a gimmick during the Ramadhan month.

Remember Pak Lah's promise of transparency? What ever happened to Gerbang Perdana's claim for RM100 mil+ compensation for the dream scenic bridge? Have you ever thought of the cost of producing a passport? Why are we paying RM300 for a freaking 32pages of almost empty small little book? Chairman Mao's Red Book would have cost lesser?

Friends, wealth creation is better than distributing freely to those who constantly argue they have not enough. Blame it on the government for poor distribution, not the Chinese who work damn hard to earn a living. We deserve it. The hardworking Malays deserve it too. Wealth creation is not about a contract which says "after 5 years of share ownership, 20% of it should be sold to a particular race"...it would make only 1 person richer not the remaining 64%! In ending...I would like to quote some words of wisdom from Datuk Seri Lim...

"...debates like these only fuel the perceptions that Malays always felt they did not have enough, the Chinese felt they had sacrified too much, while the Indians felt that they did not have anything at all."

2 random thoughts tonight after a long silence.

First would be....drums roll till I say stop...I've officially held and used a Nikon D80 with battery grip. Wooohhooo...but I still have insufficient funds to own it. I have to say the camera is Fasttttt and quite Furiouh (furious). I feel like selling my Fuji. Any takers? Selling cheap, only at the price of a D80. The weight is just nice for me but I reckon wihtout the battery grip would be better. Less straineous. The lens barrel does feel and look plasticky. What do you expect from a budget zoom lens? The body was a bit of a let down. I was expecting D70s' build quality. Not exactly there. Even the scene dial feels and looks tiny and flimsy even next to a Canon 350D's. What a pity. I do agree with some photomalaysia forummers that the buttons are abit out of contact/feel. Canon's felt better. D80's price is close to D200 and Canon's 30D. I'm slowly slowly but surely drifting to the darkside...Canon 30D.

Secondly, what's with university students now a days? Monash's very own elections is on. Running for next year's student council consist of only 2 teams. Why only 2? This semester, students witnessed the evil that resides in the heart of sinful humans. I'm very disappointed from the very beginning with one party's leadership. At the same time I am not fond of the other. If a leader isn't responsible at all, then it is pointless to even contest. On the same note, if a leader isn't honest in dealing with affairs professionally, taking advantage of one's mistake-not worthy to lead. Both do not deserve to sit on the president's chair. Own up to what you have said and dirty tactics would not win you honest votes. I say, let there be another team winning by default. I would suggest team members of both parties (president candidates stay out) to form a cooperative team and contest to win by default. Both president candidates have lost the respect of many students. Enough said.
